Spirit of Fun

"I’m Jack in the Green, the green man sometimes known as Green George, Arthur O’Bower, The Fool or Teaser, or even Robin Hood in playful guise as the May King".

"I’ve symbolised revelry throughout history and my character is one of fun and jollity associated with folk custom and rural tradition.
You can see me holding my bower sticks above my head in the Chapter House carvings of Southwell Minster, at the edge of Sherwood Forest.

I traditionally lead May Day processions ahead of the Morris dancers, as we celebrate summer’s victory over winter. Wellow Village, near Rufford, continues this tradition with its annual May Day celebrations around their village green may pole.

I can pop up anywhere there’s sport to be had, including stag hunting, so as the fun face of the forest, I’m your natural guide to Sherwood’s Spirit of Fun through the ages."

Discover how this historic 1,000 year old outdoor playground of privileged Royals & Dukes became today’s place of fun for all by exploring the ‘Spirit of Fun’ pages in this section.
